CAS enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development as well as their social and civic development, through experiential learning in the following three strands: creativity, activity and service. CAS experiences should be both challenging and enjoyable - a personal journey of self-discovery that recognizes each student's individual starting point. These experiences are:
Creativity | Activity | Service |

In the Astronomy Club, we focus on expanding our knowledge about the vast cosmos. We do so by coming together and collaborating with one another, discussing concepts and findings. Typical sessions include presentations and quizzes to deepen our members’ understanding of astronomy. On special occasions, we would invite external speakers to address us, exposing us to more knowledge about the physical universe and celestial objects. We also hold stargazing sessions at Singapore Botanic Gardens in the evening during which we apply skills that we have learnt.
Coding and Technology welcomes any student who has (or is trying to discover) a passion for programming languages and creative software programs ranging from Arduino to Fusion 360, and even to Python. It provides students with opportunities to play, experiment and be exposed to software programs that are used widely in the industry. Sessions held are also a time for students to exchange ideas and share their very own projects with one another.
Members debate anything and everything - from hard hitting current affairs to light hearted issues. There is always a debate for everyone and anyone to enjoy. At the SJI Debating Society, we aim to give all students a voice. Whether it’s learning how to express your views confidently, a desire to develop sophisticated arguments or simply wanting to learn some interesting facts about the world, we are here to help.
The Ecology Club advocates for a more sustainable and responsible way of living. This is done through various activities that can stretch across the creativity, activity and service strands, giving our members the flexibility to gain awareness about the climate situation, cultivate a love for our environment and initiate impactful projects from a personal to community level.
Film is all about a videography-loving community. From storyboarding to editing, members will journey together in learning the process of creating beautiful videos from scratch. During the pandemic, Film had no shortage of video practice. Despite the physical restrictions of online sessions, we were able to collaborate on videos for both the school and our members’ passion projects. Film will provide many opportunities for members to develop their talents together, making it the perfect ticket to the wonderful world of videography.
Formerly known as Drama, the Literary Society is focused on creative literary expression. This involves two strands: Creative writing as well as theatrical performances. One group within the society meets weekly to attend writing workshops and to appreciate each other’s creations. Concurrently, our theatre enthusiasts write, rehearse and perform their own plays.
The Mathematics Club is a place for students who love Mathematics to come together and discover more about the subject beyond the classroom through competitions, discussions and sharings. The club also aims to cultivate an interest for Mathematics within the school community by providing one-to-one tuition sessions and organizing events.
With the implementation of various Covid measures, the Mathematics Club set its sights on 3 new projects which aim to help our fellow schoolmates be more proficient in their use of the GDCs. The 3 projects are a Graphic Display Calculator (GDC) Quick-Check platform, the SJI GDC Handbook and an accompanying GDC Video Depository. The GDC Quick-Check platform consists of a series of Multiple-Choice Questions, which serves as an at-a-glance revision tool for the different useful functions for examinations. Furthermore, the SJI GDC Handbook and the GDC Depository, are practical learning resources which our schoolmates can access anytime and anywhere.
Photography provides opportunities for people to work together and take beautiful pictures for the school to treasure for years to come, while honing their photography skills. Our sessions include professional photographers addressing our members to expose them to more genres of photography, and to gain further insights into photography together.
Informally known as RAC, Rock-A-Cause is an ad-hoc CAS that focuses on learning and appreciating music. Members come together to form bands and perform, challenging their independence and initiative. Above all, Rock-A-Cause encourages students by providing an outlet for fun and creativity. In light of the pandemic, RAC has transitioned from on-site performances, such as lunchtime jams, to focusing on recorded performances that can be screened or uploaded online.
Have you stopped to look at the fascinating insects that are almost everywhere around you? Or asked yourself: which chemical reactions make the world tick? How do they work? There’s a place here waiting for you! Science Club is about asking questions about the ordinary and discussing insights with other curious and promising Josephians. Our projects are self-run and initiated within the club - you take the scientific journey on a flight of exploration.
The Society of International and Current Affairs focuses on discussing international issues and broadening members' global perspectives. We undergo training and participate in various Model United Nations (MUN) conferences where students act as a delegate for a country and gather in a council to discuss solutions for a global issue. The aim of a MUN is to develop universally acceptable proposals to solve some of the pressing global issues including poverty, health, energy and education, conflict, wildlife and conservation, climate change and imbalanced trade, among others.
Ukulele is a CAS that helps members hone their musical skills, whether they are a beginner or a veteran. Through Ukulele, we learn many different skills that help nurture us as Josephians. Although 2021 led us to move learning online, it did not stop us from continuing with our ukulele sessions. We used zoom as our main platform to resume practice with each member learning new chords and songs. Despite the challenges, we still enjoyed learning the ukulele together.
At the Visual Arts Club, everyone is welcome to explore art-making and express themselves via a wide range of mediums, from traditional to contemporary, physical to digital, and 2D to 3D. No prior art experience is necessary to join the Visual Arts Club. Visual Arts Club provides students the freedom to choose the art medium they would like to learn be it pottery, mixed media or digital art. Most of our members have not tried any forms of art before and this is completely fine! Most students learn and pickup new skills along the way.
Are you a novice looking to start a new sport, or an experienced player wanting to continue the game at a leisurely pace? Badminton lets members enjoy the pure sport of badminton without pressure or competition. Through our sport, we aim to cultivate a culture of fitness, sportsmanship, as well as provide a fun and social environment for all members.
Basketball is more than a group of boys wanting to learn the sport; it is a close knit community that have been brought together and bonded by their love for basketball. We better ourselves by pushing each other at training, and more importantly, encouraging each other to exceed our limits each time. Every Tuesday and Thursday, is a time in which we come together to play our game. Despite the limitations of COVID-19, we managed to adapt with the five-a-side rule and focus less on a full court game but rather on honing individual skills.
In Dance, members are taught technical skills by a dance instructor, all of which would be applied in a full choreography. Members will also have the opportunity to be creative and choreograph various moves and dances. Putting oneself in front of an audience can be intimidating for some. Hence, Dance provides a safe environment for all to fully express themselves, challenging individuals to step out of their comfort zone. You will likely find yourself emerging as a more confident and creative dancer, ready to explore various types of choreography.
Dragon Boat aims to introduce students to the sport as an excellent hobby that builds physical fitness, fosters strong teamwork and social networks. Students are exposed to various physical training regimes and techniques of rowing so as to compete in exciting competitions such as the annual DBS Marina Regatta.
Football is a supportive sporting community where anyone can pursue their passion for the sport. Yearly, we would send a team to participate in the ‘A’ Division Football Championships. Training during the pandemic has been difficult due to the many restrictions imposed but we are still training hard to prepare ourselves for future competitions. Come join us for an experience you will never forget!
Football (Girls) also known as Woccer was established in 2015 and has competed in the National School Games 'A' Division Competition since 2017. Our programme focuses on developing technical skills, gameplay strategy and sportsmanship for our players who are mostly new to football and team sports.
Even though hockey might not be the most popular sport in Singapore, it is a fun and engaging sport that many boys in SJI enjoy. Hockey places emphasis on both skills and teamwork, creating close knit teams year after year. Despite the COVID-19 virus, training was still carried out in groups of five outdoors, and sometimes even online on platforms such as zoom. If you would like to try something new, come join hockey!
Kin-Ball is an activity that introduces students to a less known sport in Singapore. The distinctive feature of Kin-Ball is its large ball that measures 1.2m in diameter. Through Kin-Ball, students are able to cultivate teamwork, group-think, and strategic execution. The obstacles posed by Covid-19 allowed us to provide more focus on individual skills that each player can use to contribute in a game. We concentrated on drill-based practices and techniques that ensured players could continue to hone their skills in the game post pandemic.
The EXCO had to overcome the challenge of arranging Year 5 trials and selecting 20+ new members from a pool of over 90 keen students while meeting Safe Management Measures (SMM). The Ultimate Frisbee CAS grew to a big family with the addition of the Year 5s. No matter rain or shine, the team displayed remarkable teamwork - from sharing tips for improvement to staying back together to keep and clean muddy equipment. This spirit was brought beyond the field, as the team organised mini throwing sessions. The ultimate frisbee team spent hours together going through countless drills, aiming to perfect every technique, every throw, every move.
In C3 ACE, we work with secondary school students who are facing difficulty academically or socially. On our end, we try to develop some of their skills in these areas be it study techniques or interaction skills. There are times we just lend them our listening ear as an elder sibling. We work closely with the organization Calvary Community Care, and help to coordinate events for the students.
Beacon is an ad hoc CAS that mainly conducts activities under the service strand. However, due to the pandemic, we were unable to volunteer with some organisations directly. As such, we were only able to carry out the termly bake sales. Aside from this, some of our members also took part in a Plogwalk held by Habitat for Humanity where we picked up litter together with other fellow Singaporeans through a zoom call.
BLOODay is an ad-hoc service CAS concerned with raising awareness about the need for blood donations and providing opportunities for the SJI community to donate blood. On average, two blood donation drives are carried out each year in our school in collaboration with Red Cross Singapore.
Lasallian Youth offers many opportunities to serve, including programmes such as Mobile Shortcuts (equipping the elderly with technological skills) and Lasallian Day Out (bringing the less privileged students from the Lasallian Primary Schools and Mentoring out for a day of fun). Our main programme is Lasallian Mentoring, where members coach Primary 1-6 mentees in English and Mathematics, as well as help with their homework or revision. In addition, we provide them with guidance, moral support and care. Due to social distancing regulations during the pandemic, we switched to Zoom using breakout rooms for one-to-one interaction with the children. While mentoring can be challenging at times, it is rewarding to have the opportunity to bond with the children. We hope that you will consider joining us!
Our Legion led and facilitated morning prayer every day. This has been an integral part of our activities as we ensure that everyone who attends begins their day in faith, which we believe benefited many by reducing the weekly stresses of exams, EETOKIA and simple, everyday worries. We also helped in preparing Friday mass, led by Father Danker every Friday. The weekly masses allowed students who were not able to attend mass in person at their regular places of worship to spend time with God in SJI.
Newly-formed in 2020, Paper Bridges aims to support vulnerable youths in our local and international community. We do so primarily through the simple yet meaningful activity of letter-writing. Our team consists of ad-hoc volunteers who pen and translate thoughtful, handwritten letters and core, long-term members who specialise in 4 unique committees: Education, Outreach, Administration and Logistics. Creating learning support materials for children who face learning difficulties and establishing meaningful connections with youths from various countries are among our exciting plans for 2022 and beyond.
Prism is a social enterprise club. It was formed in 2015 by seven founding student members who had the desire of harnessing entrepreneurship to raise capital to benefit the community. Today, the club has over 60 members all of whom are either involved in entrepreneurship competitions or implementing innovative fundraising events for selected voluntary welfare organisations. The club has consistently won several key competitions including the Raffles Business Symposium, Social Innovation Relay, Citi-Youth For Causes and Youth Innovation Challenge over the period 2015-2021.
Team Nila embodies both the service and activity strands in the many events that are mostly organized by ActiveSG and Team Nila. Members mainly volunteer in sporting activities. As most of these opportunities require students to be physically present at a venue to help out, many of them planned for 2020 and 2021 were derailed due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Despite facing difficulties conducting our usual activities aimed at helping the community through sports online, we still tried to make the best out of our situation with our cooperative and enthusiastic members. A few of the online activities include mass workouts and even a full programme lasting a few weeks of training where students interacted with seniors from the Fei Yue Community Centre through breakout sessions on a massive zoom call.
Ulu Pandan STAR Tuition sees members tutoring children from underserved families and trying to help them excel in their studies. Each member is assigned 1 student between Primary and Upper Secondary level to mentor and be responsible for tutoring them on subjects that they require help in. Due to COVID-19 and its restrictions, we moved from face-to-face tuition to online one-to-one lessons through Zoom.
The St. Joseph's Pelandok Venture Scout Unit is firmly rooted in our profound Scouting heritage. The unit is open to boys and girls between the ages of 16 to 18 and is one of the few school-based Venture Units in Singapore to welcome all members regardless of Scouting or Guiding experience. Common activities that we do as Ventures include hiking, camping and open-fire cooking. If you are a person who enjoys outdoor activities, you might be interested to "venture" into something new!
YoungXHush is a Creativity and Service CAS with the aim of championing mental health through the use of sign language. In line with our mother organization, Hush TeaBar, we aim to provide a safe and silent space here in SJI, organising fortnightly CAS sessions where we discuss topics pertaining to mental health as well as learn basic sign language. During the pandemic, we continued to hold sessions over Zoom, engaging with Hush TeaBar when possible to learn more about our cause. In this time, we also planned and organized events to raise awareness of mental health, especially in a school setting.
The Global Education Programme is an extension of the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) programme. It is designed to provide opportunities for physical challenges, cultural engagement and community service during a 7-day trip outside Singapore. The aim is for students to acquire the knowledge base and understanding of global issues and develop skills to take action towards creating a better world. The programme embraces both SJI and IB’s vision of developing caring global citizens who will be a catalyst for change and make a difference to the world.
